Preparing for Resurrection: Holy Week Lessons in Love, Sacrifice, and New Commandment

How do we prepare our hearts for resurrection during Holy Week?

As Lent enters its final week, the air changes. The season intensifies. Jesus turns toward Jerusalem with deliberate determination. The cross casts its shadow, but so does the empty tomb. Holy Week isn’t just about remembering events from 2,000 years ago—it’s about preparing our hearts for resurrection today.

Three Gospel moments from Holy Week teach us how to prepare: Mary’s extravagant anointing, Jesus’ foot-washing, and His new commandment. Each one is a doorway into deeper readiness for Easter.

💮 1. Extravagant Love: The Lesson of Mary’s Perfume (John 12:1-8)

Six days before Passover, Mary takes a pint of pure nard—worth a year’s wages—and pours it on Jesus’ feet. Then she wipes His feet with her hair. The house fills with fragrance. And Judas objects: “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor?”

But Jesus defends her: “Leave her alone. She intended to pour this perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.” Mary understood something the disciples missed: Jesus was about to die. While others debated theology and kingdom politics, Mary worshipped. While others calculated cost, Mary poured out everything.

Resurrection preparation begins with extravagant love. Not measured giving. Not calculated devotion. Not reasonable religion. Mary held nothing back. She gave her best, her most expensive, her irreplaceable. And Jesus received it as preparation for His burial.

Before resurrection, there must be death. Before death, there must be love that doesn’t count cost. Mary’s perfume teaches us: prepare for Easter by loving Jesus with abandon.

🪣 2. Humble Service: The Lesson of Foot-Washing (John 13:1-17)

The night before He died, Jesus did the unthinkable. He took off His outer clothing, wrapped a towel around His waist, and washed His disciples’ dirty feet. Peter protested: “You shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus replied: “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

Foot-washing was slave’s work. It was beneath dignity. Yet the King of kings performed it. Why? Because humble service prepares us for resurrection. When we allow Jesus to wash us—to cleanse, to serve, to humble Himself for us—we receive what we cannot give ourselves.

And then He commands: “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” Receiving humble service prepares us to give humble service. Easter people are foot-washers. Resurrection people pick up towels.

Before we can rise with Him, we must let Him wash us. Before we can serve others, we must receive His service. Humility is the path to glory.

💞 3. New Commandment: The Lesson of Love (John 13:34-35)

After washing their feet, Jesus gave a new commandment: “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

The commandment wasn’t new—love was in the Old Testament. What’s new is the standard: “As I have loved you.” How did Jesus love?

  • He loved to the end (John 13:1) — completely, not partially
  •
  • He loved the unworthy — disciples who would abandon Him
  •
  • He loved sacrificially — laying down His life
  •
  • He loved practically — washing feet, serving needs
  •

This love is the identifying mark of disciples. Not correct doctrine alone. Not impressive ministry. Not spiritual experiences. Love. Jesus-style love.

Preparing for resurrection means practicing this love. Before Easter Sunday, examine your love: Is it like His? Does it go to the end? Does it serve the unworthy? Does it sacrifice? Does it wash feet?

⏳ 4. The Rhythm of Holy Week

As you journey through these final days, let each day prepare you:

  • Palm Sunday (March 29): Welcome the King. Shout “Hosanna!” but know He comes not to conquer Rome but to conquer death.
  •
  • Holy Monday (March 30): Like Mary, pour out your most expensive worship. Hold nothing back.
  •
  • Holy Tuesday (March 31): Let Jesus wash you. Receive His humble service. Then pick up a towel.
  •
  • Holy Wednesday (April 1): Rest in His love. Prepare for the days ahead.
  •
  • Maundy Thursday (April 2): Remember the new commandment. Love as He loved.
  •
  • Good Friday (April 3): Gaze at the cross. Let the old self die.
  •
  • Holy Saturday (April 4): Wait in silence. The tomb is not the end.
  •
  • Easter Sunday (April 5): HE IS RISEN! The preparation becomes celebration!

📝 Practical Applications for Lent Week 4

1. Practice extravagance. This week, give something costly to Jesus—time, resources, worship. Pour out like Mary.

2. Receive washing. Let Jesus serve you. Receive His forgiveness, His cleansing, His humble love.

3. Wash someone’s feet. Literally or metaphorically. Serve someone in a way that’s beneath your dignity. Pick up the towel.

4. Love like Jesus. Choose one person to love “to the end” this week—unconditionally, sacrificially, practically.

5. Walk Holy Week daily. Use the daily guide above. Let each day shape your heart.

🙏 Prayer for Week 4

“Lord Jesus, Holy Week is here. The cross approaches. The tomb awaits. But so does resurrection. Prepare my heart. Teach me to pour out like Mary—extravagantly, without counting cost. Teach me to receive like Peter—letting You wash me, serve me, humble Yourself for me. Teach me to love like You—to the end, without conditions, with towel and basin. Walk with me through this holy week. Let me not rush to Sunday without passing through Friday. Let me not celebrate resurrection without facing death. Prepare me, Lord. Make me ready. In Your name, Amen.”
