The Greatest Commandment • The Heart of the Gospel • Christ's New Command
John 3:16 (NIV)
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."
Matthew 22:37-39 (NIV)
Unconditional, sacrificial, divine love that seeks the highest good of others.
"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." - 1 John 4:10
How Jesus loved us completely, sacrificially, and unconditionally.
"As I have loved you, so you must love one another." - John 13:34
Love One Another completely, sacrificially, and unconditionally.
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." - John 13:34-35
Practical love for neighbors, enemies, and the body of Christ.
"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God." - 1 John 4:7
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)
Day 1: Memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Day 2: Perform one secret act of kindness
Day 3: Forgive someone who hurt you
Day 4: Tell someone why you appreciate them
Day 5: Pray for someone difficult to love
Day 6: Serve someone without expecting thanks
Day 7: Share God's love with someone new
A: Human love is often conditional and based on feelings. God's agape love is unconditional, sacrificial, and unchanging. "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." - 1 John 4:10
A: Start by asking God to love them through you. Pray for them regularly. Look for Christ in them. Remember that love is a choice, not just a feeling. "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." - Matthew 5:44
A: Heart = emotional commitment, Soul = complete being and will, Mind = intellectual understanding and focus. It means giving God every part of yourself without reservation.
A: Christ's love is sacrificial, patient, kind, forgiving, and seeks the highest good of others. Examine your motives: Are you serving or being served? Giving or taking? Building up or tearing down?
A: It's very difficult. Our capacity to love others unconditionally comes from experiencing God's unconditional love for us. "We love because he first loved us." - 1 John 4:19
A: Love sets healthy boundaries. True love says no to harmful behavior while continuing to value the person. Boundaries protect the relationship and both individuals.
A: Love makes forgiveness possible. When we understand how much we've been forgiven by God, we can extend forgiveness to others. Love keeps no record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5).
A: Spend time with the source of love (God), practice loving actions daily, ask for the Holy Spirit's help, and surround yourself with loving community.
A: Love isn't just something God does - it's who He is at His core nature. Every action flows from His loving character. "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." - 1 John 4:8
A: Perfect love casts out fear because when we're secure in God's unconditional love, we don't fear rejection, failure, or the future. "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear." - 1 John 4:18
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me so much that You sent Your Son Jesus to die for my sins. Help me to comprehend how wide and long and high and deep is Your love for me. Fill my heart with Your agape love today. Teach me to love You with all my heart, soul, and mind. Show me how to love my neighbors, my family, and even my enemies with the same unconditional love You have shown me. May my life be a reflection of Your love to everyone I meet. In Jesus' precious name, Amen.
